UWGMWC Graphic, Why I Volunteer

February 7, 2024

We learned from some of our best partners why volunteering is important to them.

We know that volunteering is good for our health, fills us with love, and makes a positive impact in communities. It allows us to connect with ourselves, our coworkers, and with new and old friends. And it’s a great way to support organizations who provide vital services to groups and people who need it most.

We know why we at United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County volunteer and it inspired us to ask, “Why do you volunteer?” With the help of several volunteers and key workplace partners, we learned why others in our community volunteer as well. Their answers filled us with joy!

Read why some of our best volunteers and partners volunteer with United Way and become inspired to share the love with your own volunteer experience.

“I volunteer because United Way gives back so much to the community, and I want to be a part of that.

– Jessica Brandt, Winter Bites Volunteer

“To help people that need food.”
“I just think it’s fun and a good way to help people.”
“I volunteer because I think it’s important to give back to the community.”
“I volunteer because I want to make it a family tradition.

– The Kitzke Family, Winter Bites Volunteers

“Volunteering with United Way is a meaningful way to connect with both colleagues and other people in the community as we all come together for an important purpose. The United Way staff is so organized, and the Volunteer Center space provides the perfect venue. Whether we are putting together diaper packs, boxes of food, or backpacks full of school supplies, it’s powerful to know the number of people in the community who will be touched by the decisions of volunteers who gave of their time that day.”

– Annemarie Scobey-Polacheck, Johnson Controls

“I love volunteering with United Way because I can count on you guys to provide a wide variety of opportunities that make meaningful community impact. Volunteering with United Way is great because the activities support local initiatives, strengthen social connections and create lasting memories.”

– Brion Nash, Landmark Credit Union

“Volunteering with United Way gives me a front-row seat to see the impact on those we serve.  We may not always see the full influence of our volunteer hours. Some of it is immediate but the hope is we’re contributing to long-term, sustained support for our community members by providing them with tools, encouragement, and assurance to reach their potential. Additionally, the experiences I have in my United Way engagements provides me energy to bring back into both my work life and personal life.”

– David Gricunas, Northwestern Mutual

“Volunteering through United Way allows me to offer assistance when I can to those in need and makes me feel a part of our community! Plus, all the amazing people I get to meet along the way.”

– Noreen M. Noonan, Northwestern Mutual Foundation

“I love volunteering with United Way because they give me the opportunity to do so alongside my colleagues and family. It is energizing to work together towards the common goal of supporting the needs of our community.”

– Sarah Kaufmann, Rockwell Automation

“I love volunteering with United Way as working with friendly staff and fellow volunteers, together we positively impact several different organizations to help support our community.”

– Zachary Hanson, Johnson Controls
