Christy Brown's headshotThe Linda McFerrin African American Nonprofit Leadership Award recognizes an outstanding African American nonprofit executive who has provided exemplary leadership in the community.

Christy Brown, JD
Alverno College

Christy Brown became president of Alverno College in July 2023. Her job entails collaborating with the college’s leadership team and faculty, working to implement its strategic plan; developing and supporting equity and diversity efforts; and expanding Alverno’s national and international reputation. Prior to coming to Alverno Brown served as Chief Executive Officer at Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast, a position she held since 2012. Originally from Milwaukee, Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Stanford University. With a passion for learning and scholarly achievement, she then pursued a joint-degree graduate program earning both her Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law and a Master of Arts in Humanities with a focus on African American and Women’s Studies from Duke University Graduate School.

Campaign Coordinator in honor of John A. Puelicher. 

Fiona Cismesia

Fiona Cismesia joined United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County as a Campaign Coordinator, supporting ambassadors in running successful workplace campaigns at over 50 local nonprofits. She has always been proud to share how United Way is mobilizing resources to drive needle-moving community change.

Fiona is from Downers Grove, Illinois, and first came to Wisconsin to attend Beloit College, where she studied Anthropology, Spanish, and Museum Studies. Before her time at United Way, Fiona served as a Student Success Coach for scholars in the Milwaukee Public School system through the education nonprofit, City Year Milwaukee. There, Fiona provided mentorship through social-emotional, and academic intervention to over 120 students in her two years of AmeriCorps service.
