Yet many families across Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, and Washington counties do not have a computer at home. This is called “the digital divide.” And this is where you come in.
United Way has created Techquity, a collective impact effort to bridge the digital divide and ensure digital equity and inclusion for every person in our community. Keep reading to learn how you can get involved.
United Way has set an ambitious goal to distribute 50,000 refurbished computers over five years to local people in need across our four-county region. This work is made possible through a partnership with Digital Bridge, a local organization that refurbishes digital devices for distribution to those who need them. The cost for Digital Bridge to provide a refurbished laptop or desktop computer and training materials is $150 and we are currently raising funds to support this effort.

To achieve this goal of 50,000 computers in five years, United Way and Digital Bridge will use Digital Bridge’s existing “Bridging Milwaukee” program model, which distributes refurbished tech devices and offers materials and opportunities for recipients to enhance their digital skills and literacy. United Way and Digital Bridge will partner on community distribution and education events, partnering with local nonprofits and other organizations to ensure everyone in need of a computer can get connected.
Access to an internet-capable device, be it a computer, tablet, or smartphone, is a basic need. Without a computer, individuals and families cannot access the critical health, education, and financial stability resources they need to thrive. When everyone can get connected, our whole community will feel the positive effects.
