United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County
On any given day, at any given moment, you can go on Carvd N Stone’s website and find positive news. And only positive news.
That’s the mission of Nyesha Stone, Carvd N Stone’s Founder and Public Relations Director. Noticing that news sources lacked positive representation of Black and Brown communities, Nyesha launched her news and marketing agency in 2017 to focus on what’s not usually reported. The company started, and is headquartered in, Milwaukee, but also covers other large metropolitan areas such as Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles.
With funding help from United Way’s Racial Equity Fund, Nyesha was able to launch a marketing campaign, cover overhead and travel costs, and provide a cushion for bills. The grant has allowed her to move forward in building a news company that she hopes will one day become global, with a consistent focus on positive news in the Black, Brown, and People of Color communities. Her goal is to bring journalism back to how it should be: with mutual respect from both journalists and media consumers.
“Everyone wants the narrative to change,” Nyesha said. “But it’s hard to get support for our positive news coverage. United Way was the first place that said, ‘Take the money and go cover news.’”
We’re thrilled that Nyesha has been able to grow her company, including taking on an intern who has helped Carvd N Stone report bilingually, and that grant funding from the Racial Equity Fund has supported her important work. Nyesha is also a graduate of United Way’s Project Lead cohort, which helps build her ability to mentor her growing team of young journalists. Nyesha and Carvd N Stone are truly showing what it means to Live United.
