Book Fairs

Main Content

First we learn to read—then we read to learn! Being a strong reader helps in every class and in every grade.

The best way to become a strong reader? Practice. And when kids get to pick out their own books—chances are, they will read them!

For some of our community’s children books are a luxury item. That is why, United Way partners with Scholastic to host a series of book fairs at Milwaukee Public Schools and Waukesha Public Schools called My Very Own Library. At these book fairs held every May and December, each student selects five free books to build their home library.

Since United Way began the program in 2015, the project has distributed well over a half-million student-selected books and awarded schools with an additional $1.3 million in Scholastic credits to add to their budgets to meet students' needs!
