First we learn to read—then we read to learn! Being a strong reader helps in every class and in every grade.
The best way to become a strong reader? Practice. And when kids get to pick out their own books—chances are, they will read them!
For some of our community’s children books are a luxury item. That is why, United Way partners with Scholastic to host a series of book fairs at Milwaukee Public Schools called My Very Own Library and at Waukesha Public Schools called Build My Bookshelf. At these book fairs held every May and December, each student selects five free books to build their home library.
Each fair needs volunteers and that is where you come in.
Volunteers will be in teams of 2-4 per shift, with a United Way site lead assisting at each school.
- Help students pick out books
- Help keep books organized
- Assist with the check-out process of FREE books
- Assist in other areas of the classroom if needed
To volunteer for this event, full vaccination status is required (including being up to date with boosters). After you register, a United Way staff member will reach out to share the process for confirming your vaccination status.
