Angel is a bright, affectionate girl who has been in a United Way-funded after-school program at the Milwaukee Christian Center for the past three years. But behind her smile, she was struggling. Even though Angel showed a great deal of interest in reading, she had a low grade point average and was held back in school. To ensure failing would not be repeated, Angel began attending tutoring sessions after every school day.
Ardys, a volunteer who became one of Angel’s tutors, used a variety of strategies to make learning interesting for Angel and help keep her focused. “Angel never told anybody she was struggling, so it was important to me to help her stay on track,” Ardys explained.
In time, both her grades and attendance showed improvement. With help from staff and volunteers, Angel flourished with much improved self-esteem. She proved she had the potential and that she understood the importance of doing well in school. She was very proud to be passed on to the next grade level.
Education is one of the building blocks to a good life. By providing after-school and mentoring programs, United Way is helping children and youth achieve their potential.
