United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County
Charles, Marc, Shanette and Neri started out as high school dropouts but are now on a path to a brighter future thanks to the United Way-funded General Education Development program at Literacy Services of Wisconsin (LSW). Each of them successfully earned their GED and were awarded the Norman Gill Scholarship, founded in the name of a former tutor at LSW, to continue their education.
Charles currently attends Milwaukee Area Technical College and is pursuing a degree in Business so he can open up his own nonprofit. Marc became a diesel mechanic and is attending business classes so he can own his own shop. Shanette is pursuing a career as a dental hygienist and Neri hopes to become a Registered Nurse.
Their academic success also continues to inspire others around them. Neri’s sister and cousin recently enrolled in the same GED program.
