500+ Women Unite to Celebrate 10 Years of Teen Pregnancy Prevention
May 18, 2016
500+ attendees from our four-county region gathered Wednesday for the annual Women United Bruncheon at The Pfister Hotel. During the bruncheon, the inaugural Linda T. Mellowes “Woman Leader of the Year” award was presented. The award, named after Linda T. Mellowes – former United Way board chair and founding member of the Women’s Leadership group in 2002 – is awarded to a woman who exhibits leadership, is a role model, and gives back to our community. The recipient was Jan Martin; an early advocate for teen pregnancy prevention and a founding member of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Oversight Committee.
The team also had exciting news to share from the CDC that Milwaukee’s Teen Birth rate is currently lower than the national average. Read the press release.

Investing in Impact
Since the launch of the Women’s Leadership program, 2,000 local women have invested over $100 million in evidence-based programming to help thousands of young people in our community make positive choices. Nichelle was part of one of those programs, Making Proud Choices, at PEARLS for Teen Girls. Read her blog about how the program helped her unveil her authentic self.
