During the holidays, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of finding the perfect gifts for the people we love. But for families in need, wish lists might be as simple as warm coats and personal care items. The holidays offer an opportunity to teach your kids about compassion, kindness and the importance of giving back to the community. We’ve compiled a list of ways you can give back, all while spending time together as a family.
1. Host a supply drive
As cold weather approaches, our agencies are in need of supplies to help clients they serve this time of year. Top needs include cold weather gear, diapers, baby wipes, infant formula, new undergarments, socks for all ages and basic hygiene items. Host a supply drive and invite family, friends and neighbors to participate and join in on the fun.
2. Bake some goodies together – for a cause
Baking holiday treats can be a fun family activity. Knowing you’re baking for a cause makes it even sweeter. Consider donating goodies to one of our partner agencies, who can deliver them local seniors or families who wouldn’t otherwise get baked treats.

3. Serve a meal to families in need
Each year, the Salvation Army of Milwaukee County hosts a Christmas Family Feast at the Wisconsin Center, giving every member of the community the opportunity to partake in a holiday dinner. The event is free and depends on volunteers to make it happen. Consider spending a few hours spreading holiday cheer at this year’s feast.
4. Volunteer at a food pantry
Help Friedens Community Ministries prepare their food pantry to serve 125 households each week through various tasks.
5. Help sort and organize donations
A lot happens between a donation being made and the donation reaching people in need. Volunteers are needed to unpack, sort, organize and stock donated items with Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Community Services.
