Mental Health Improvement Fund: Karla & Bread of Healing Clinic
Bread of Healing Free Clinic, supported by United Way, is a free medical clinic designed to serve low-income people who experience barriers to accessing ongoing healthcare. And as Dr. S. Michele Cohen, Behavioral Health Program Director at the clinic noted, it’s based on relationships.
Their counseling services recognize that trauma impacts not only individuals but entire communities. To support healing on a broader scale, the core counseling team is made up of master’s-level interns who bring fresh knowledge, compassion, and a strong commitment to serving others as they train for their professional careers.
“While that can, to some, feeling overwhelming to retell my story, I’ve learned that it’s a fresh start every year for me to set new goals and what I really want to work on,” said Karla, who has used Bread of Healing’s counseling services.
The program receives support from the Mental Health Improvement Fund. The fund was created by the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership and United Way to ensure people of all ages have access to the high-quality mental and behavioral health care that they need and deserve.
“I truly believe that Bread of Healing saved my life,” Karla expressed.
Said Dr. Cohen, “At Bread of Healing, we have an open door. We don’t screen out people. We screen in people.”
Your donation to the Mental Health Improvement Fund will help organizations, like Bread of Healing Free Clinic, provide mental and behavioral health care to adults, families, and children. United is the Way that we ensure the health and well-being of every member of our community.
