Safe & Stable Homes: Luisa & FRIENDS, Inc.
Making the decision to go to FRIENDS was emotional for Luisa. It wasn’t her first time; she had come to the organization as a child with her mother. But now, she was returning as a mother herself. It was a scary choice, but one she knew was right. And for many, it’s the hardest decision they’ll ever make.
FRIENDS, Inc. is the sole provider of shelter and support services for individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual assault in Washington County.
“When survivors like Luisa come to us, asking for that help is the hardest step,” said Jesikah Becker, Executive Director of FRIENDS, Inc. “When they are able to join our services, we get to see how strong they are.”
Individuals and their families are met with compassion and equipped with the tools they need to take the next steps in their journey. United Way’s Safe & Stable Homes initiative provides funding for FRIENDS’ Transitional Living Program, which offers support with housing, transportation, and employment-related expenses. The organization empowers survivors to reclaim their independence and build new lives free from abuse.
Luisa found strength by remembering the courage her mother had shown years ago.
“I decided that I needed to have the courage to do the same thing and break out of the cycle,” she recalled. “I needed to do what was best for not only myself, but for my kids.”
While FRIENDS offers financial assistance, the support goes far beyond that. The organization also provides access to advocacy, children’s services, preventative education, and legal resources. The staff is committed to making sure no one feels alone as they rebuild their lives.
With the support she received, Luisa now sees a hopeful future for herself and her children.
“I appreciate life more. I appreciate all the help I’ve gotten,” she reflected. “I’m definitely on a better track than I was.”
