Safe & Stable Homes: Sherel & Hope House
What is hope?
It's finding yourself. It's looking further than your current circumstances. It's the culmination of tools needed to make your life better. It's Hope House.
When Sherel’s daughter got sick with RSV, hope was all Sherel had left. She lost her job and home while her daughter fought in the hospital. Though she was down, Sherel found Hope House with a desire to get back up.
Supported by United Way’s Safe & Stable Homes initiative, Hope House of Milwaukee is dedicated to ending homelessness and creating healthy communities. Through the Family Flex Fund, they are able to provide financial assistance and case management for families who would otherwise be using crisis services to navigate homelessness. Kenyetta, a Case Manager at Hope House, worked with Sherel so that she could focus on her daughter, and herself.
“She just jumped right on board,” Kenyetta said. “You saw that she was down and at her wit’s end, but she had the willpower to keep going and better her situation.”
With the weight and uncertainty of what was next lifted, things turned around for Sherel. Receiving emotional support along with housing support allowed her to find new opportunities.
“I’m moving forward,” Sherel reflected. “I have better opportunities. I went back to school. It’s great.”
Hope House doesn’t only provide case management for those at risk of homelessness. They also provide emergency shelter and wraparound services once families are housed.
“They help everyone that needs help,” Sherel said. “It’s like a family. It’s not an organization, it’s a family.”
When you donate to United Way’s Safe & Stable Homes initiative, you’re supporting organizations like Hope House to ensure families are safely housed and you’re helping mothers like Sherel get back to what matters most: caring for their children. United is the Way we give families better futures.
