“It’s been one of the most important things to happen to our family,” Molly said.

Molly’s son has cerebral palsy and navigating a two-story rental home was challenging, especially after he had major surgery. Molly spoke with her son’s physical therapist and was looking for renter-friendly adjustments that they could make to the house.

“She said, ‘Why not apply for Habitat for Humanity?’” Molly recalled, but she hadn’t considered that her family could be eligible. “I went in and thought, ‘Well, the worst they could say would be no.’”

Habitat for Humanity of Waukesha & Jefferson Counties’ Homeownership Program focuses on affordable housing as a foundation for stability and opportunity. The program helps qualified low- and moderate-income buyers navigate the often-complicated home buying process. Through financial literacy education and helping build their home, participants in the program learn basic homeownership skills.

“Molly’s story is special and unique for us,” said Melissa Songco, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Waukesha & Jefferson Counties. “We’re not really in the custom home business, but we wanted to make the house work for them.”

“It’s a miracle to find affordable housing,” she went on. “It’s a unicorn to find affordable and accessible housing. We were able to be affordable and accessible.”
