In an unassuming Cream City brick building in downtown Milwaukee, two organizations collaborate daily to help families who are at risk of experiencing homelessness. Together, Community Advocates and Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee are working to make sure families don’t experience homelessness. They’re doing this through the Milwaukee Rental Housing Resource Center and EvictionFreeMKE.

Community Advocates serves people who are coming to them in crisis such as those who are at risk of losing their home or who are fleeing domestic violence. Through the Rental Housing Resource Center, they help individuals resolve the crisis and prepare them with resources, education, and services so they can better advocate for themselves in the future. With these tools, individuals seeking help feel more knowledgeable about their rights and can better keep their families safely in their homes.

Legal Aid Society provides free civil legal representation to qualifying Milwaukee County residents. They operate EvictionFreeMKE, which connects Milwaukee families who are facing eviction to free lawyers and resources at no cost. Evictions affect entire neighborhoods and are traumatizing to the families being evicted. EvictionFreeMKE has helped families remain stable, keeping kids in schools and families out of shelters.

The partnership of Community Advocates and Legal Aid Society of Milwaukee embody what it means to Live United, and together, we can help keep their mission going. It starts with your donation to United Way’s Safe & Stable Homes initiative.
