"The idea of losing my home felt absolutely terrifying. I felt helpless."
Crystal has always been a hard worker. She started working when she was 14, and she has been the single-parent provider for her three sons. Her family had relocated from Massachusetts to Waukesha, with no familiarity of the area or resources. When medical problems began, so did Crystal’s loss of income. Worried and unsure, she found her beacon of hope: Family Promise of Waukesha County.
Family Promise is a nonprofit organization located in downtown Waukesha, whose focus is to help people stay in the homes that they currently reside in. They do this through their Family Homelessness Prevention Program. The aid continues beyond financial assistance with long-term case management that helps families gather the education and resources that they need to stay housed and empowered.
Crystal and her family were able to stay in their home with the assistance they received from Family Promise. She now has peace of mind and the resources to help her remain stable. She also knows that Family Promise will be there for families in Waukesha the way that they were there for her and her sons.
“If it wasn’t for them, I don’t know where I would be,” she said. “I’m thankful for that.”
The Family Homelessness Prevention Program at Family Promise of Waukesha County is just one of the programs funded by our Safe & Stable Homes initiative. Together, we can continue to help more families like Crystal’s. Your donation to United Way makes it possible.
