Some leaders step forward. Others bring people with them. And then there are those rare individuals who do both – quietly, consistently, and with a deep belief in what’s possible when a community comes together.

This year, United Way is proud to honor Lynn Sprangers as the 2026 Linda T. Mellowes Woman Leader of the Year, recognizing not only her leadership but the lasting impact she has made on Women United, United Way, and the Greater Milwaukee community.

Lynn’s connection to Women United began at its very beginning. As a founding member, she helped shape what has become one of the most powerful and impactful donor networks in the United Way system.

“It was exhilarating to be on the ground level of creating something that spoke clearly to women in our community,” Lynn shared. “A space where women could come together, problem solve, and raise the resources needed to tackle big issues.”

Over the years, Women United has evolved into more than just a philanthropic network. It has become a place where relationships are built, friendships are formed, and support systems take root. From addressing teen pregnancy in earlier years to advancing youth mental wellness today, Women United has never shied away from complex challenges. And Lynn has been there every step of the way, helping guide conversations, elevate ideas, and champion solutions.

“It’s given me a bevy of friends I never could have imagined,” Lynn said. “We come from different backgrounds and different stages of life, but we’re connected by a shared commitment to making our community better.”

A Legacy of Leadership

Throughout her decades of involvement in the community, Lynn has seen firsthand what happens when individuals come together with a shared purpose. Ask her what United Way means to her, and she won’t just talk about impact. She’ll talk about the connection she feels and the values that United Way embodies.

“On your own, you might wonder how your contribution can make a difference,” she said. “But when we pool our resources, we can move the needle on issues that have challenged our community for years.”

It’s why receiving the Woman Leader of the Year award is both meaningful and deeply humbling for Lynn.

“To have my name associated with leaders like Linda Mellowes means a great deal to me,” she shared. “If I can do even a fraction of what she and so many others have done for this community, I would be grateful.”

“But this recognition isn’t just about me,” she continued. “It represents the collective work of so many incredible women: those who have led, supported, and shown up for this community year after year.”

And that’s exactly the kind of leadership Lynn has embodied throughout her journey. Her commitment to the community has earned her numerous honors, including the TEMPO Mentor Award and Milwaukee Business Journal’s Women of Influence.

Lynn’s many accolades are a testament to her vision but it’s her remarkable career that reveals the full depth of her leadership and influence beyond awards.

In addition to her impact with Women United, Lynn is the founder and Chief Inspiration Officer of 54 Hands Productions, a documentary film company creating work for PBS affiliates nationwide. Her diverse career spans two decades in broadcast journalism – including as chief political reporter for WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee – and executive roles with organizations such as the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club, Mount Mary University, and the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts.

Her commitment to advancing women and strengthening the community is also reflected by her board leadership with organizations like United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, the Marcus Performing Arts Center, Greater Milwaukee Urban League, Visit Milwaukee, and Milwaukee Women Inc.

It’s her approach to leadership, grounded in listening, collaboration, and action, that has helped drive change wherever she is and brings everyone to the table.

“When we listen better, we also get to a better place because the people who recommended things know they've been heard,” she said.

That spirit of listening and shared purpose is what has defined Lynn’s journey. And it’s what continues to inspire others to step forward, work together, and create lasting change in the community.

Because when we come together, we don’t just imagine a stronger community. We build it.
