Our Stories: Why We Support United Way
September 8, 2025
Stories have the power to open hearts and minds, to spark change, and to build bridges between people and communities. They remind us of where we’ve been…and show where we can go.
Learn why Danielle Bly, Julia Boss, Doris Wessels, and Charmyse White support United Way as they share their stories.

I give to United Way because I believe in the power of community and the responsibility that we have to lift one another up. As someone who was born and raised right here in Milwaukee, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible impact we can make when we come together with purpose and compassion. Giving back isn’t just something I do, it’s who I am. And through United Way, I know and trust that my support helps to create real change for the families in our city, the city I love.
Julia Boss
Technology United Co-chair
I had been aware of United Way for quite some time, as my company previously held United Way campaigns. Then, post-COVID, a leader in my organization, John Dunn, suggested I join him in attending a Technology United council meeting, and they haven’t been able to keep me away. After joining the council – John was spot-on with his thoughts that I would be passionate about the mission and vision of the council, as well as enjoy the people I would get to meet and work with along the way – I was nominated to be a co-chair and accepted the position. It’s been an honor to support the council with different ideas and sweat equity with initiatives like Techquity.
A community consists of members, neighbors, and friends who support one another. I don’t think that anyone can say that they’ve never needed a helping hand at one point or another. I know I have multiple times. To be able to collaborate with an amazing group of individuals who genuinely care about making the world a better place by supporting the people in it, that’s just something that makes sense.

I support United Way because I believe in our ability to serve as a convener to solve community problems collaboratively. At a time when polarization and division are at the forefront, we know that United is the Way to get things done. I’ve lived my whole life in our four-county footprint and want to see my neighbors safe, healthy, and successful. Our work to give families safe & stable homes, give people opportunities for employment & advancement, support students who are struggling, and bridge the digital divide makes our community strong and ready to handle future challenges.

I first got involved with United Way through my role at Johnson Controls, helping lead our giving campaigns. But the truth is, United Way was part of my story long before I ever realized it.
Growing up in a low-income neighborhood, I spent time in places like the Boys & Girls Club — spaces filled with mentors, resources, and experiences that expanded my world. Those programs, supported by United Way, gave me access to opportunities my family couldn’t afford and helped me imagine more for myself.
Now I have the privilege of giving back. I support United Way because someone I’ll never meet gave to the campaign, and their gift helped change my life. It’s my turn to help open that door for someone else.
