Our Stories

Stories have the power to open hearts and minds, to spark change, and to build bridges between people and communities. They remind us of where we’ve been…and show where we can go.

Learn why Tony Avery, Brianna Hogans, and Tracie Sparks support United Way as they share their stories.

I support United Way because I believe in the power of community. United Way’s work isn’t just about raising money. It’s about making our community stronger and when the community is stronger, people are happier, together, and everyone is at peace with one another. And this brings about generational changes. We can make a difference with one dollar at a time when we all come together.

As a portfolio analyst, I spend a lot of time thinking about the impact of small details. If one data point changed, would that make a difference? My biggest passion is expanding the mindset beyond the financial sector and into the community. For example, if a student had access to technology at home, would they have excelled in school? After expressing my desire to make a difference in our community, my manager introduced me to United Way’s LINC. LINC provided me with a chance to connect with other young professionals who share my passion for change. Each time that I meet with these individuals, I am inspired to step out of my comfort zone to do more in our community. Through LINC, I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer in meaningful ways, support local initiatives, and learn more about the challenges facing Milwaukee. Joining LINC wasn’t just a professional decision; it was a personal one. It reminded me that when the community comes together, change is possible.

I first became involved with United Way while working at ManpowerGroup. The CHRO, Michelle Nettles, and her husband are very involved, and she really carries that energy to ManpowerGroup. Anitra Riley makes those visions come true and honestly, the buzz around United Way at MPG just makes you want to be involved! Combined with United Way’s mission and the very important impact United Way makes in the community, it's an easy "yes" to stay involved.

United Way is really a pillar and a strong example in the community. There are so many initiatives that really support the Milwaukee community in making this a better place to live. My favorite is Reducing Barriers to Employment & Advancement. Stable and sustainable employment is so integral in supporting our youth, mental health, a healthy and productive person, and a healthy and productive family. There's such a sense of pride that comes from earning an income. Coming from a background in recruiting, HR, and DEI, I've seen so many people not be able to pass background checks for a minor offense or not have transportation to a location so they’re unable to take the job. Reducing Barriers to Employment & Advancement has consistently worked with organizations that help break down these barriers to employment and support individuals in their pursuit of stable and sustainable employment. I think it's United Way’s most important initiative to help shape a community that thrives.
