When people think of retirement, they may imagine slowing down (and a reduced schedule). For members of Retire United, it’s anything but. It marks the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with opportunities to stay active, engaged, and connected. Just ask Dave Michalski and Reid Engstrom.
Since its inception in 2013, Retire United has empowered its members to stay active in the community through giving, volunteering, and advocacy. It also fosters social connections among like-minded retirees who are passionate about giving back, leveraging United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County’s key initiatives to address big problems with big solutions. For Dave Michalski, a Retire United co-chair, being involved offers the chance to use his talents and skills in meaningful ways. And for Reid Engstrom, a member of Retire United and recent Gwen T. Jackson Community Service Award recipient, staying involved is an extension of a lifelong commitment to community service, even after stepping away from full-time work.
“Volunteering feels like I’m accomplishing something," Reid shared. "It’s fulfilling to see the impact we’re making. You’re staying connected to the community, contributing where it matters most.”
Over the years, Retire United has engaged members in meaningful volunteer activities such as assembling school supplies for local students, packing diapers for new parents, and supporting events like Project Homeless Connect, a favorite volunteer experience highlighted by both Dave and Reid. This event, designed to connect individuals experiencing homelessness with essential services, leaves a lasting impact not only on the participants but also on the volunteers.
“The best experience I had was at Project Homeless Connect Waukesha, where a mother and daughter were able to get a laptop,” Dave said. “They had a lift in their walk, because now they had a tool that can change their life.”
Reid also stressed the impact that participating in hands-on volunteer events like Backpack Coalition and Diaper Bank has had.
"There’s something about seeing all the supplies come together, knowing they’re going to kids who need them," Reid said. “It’s just pure joy.”
But it’s not just about volunteering. Retire United is about making real change. Through advocacy efforts and future educational workshops, Retire United members have the chance to amplify their voices and help positively shape the future for generations to
come. And giving back is something that comes naturally to Dave and Reid.
"Being part of something bigger than yourself is incredibly rewarding," Dave explained. "If you’re in a position to give – whether it’s time, money, or expertise – you should. It connects you to your neighbors and your city in ways you can’t even imagine.”
Reid echoed that sentiment, emphasizing how crucial it is to trust where your dollars go. Advocacy is key among Retire United members, who take the time to raise awareness among peers about community needs and how United Way addresses them.
"I view United Way as my charitable investment advisor," Reid said. "There are many, really strong organizations and agencies out there. United Way is bringing them together. I know that when I give, the dollars are used smartly and go directly toward real, measurable change."
At its heart, Retire United isn’t just about retirees. It’s about continuing the spirit of giving, connecting, and advocating for a better community. And while some people might think Retire United is just a committee of retirees, Dave is quick to remind that it’s much more.
"It's a community of people who care," he emphasized. "Everyone, whether retired or not, has a role in making our community stronger."
For those seeking a way to stay connected, give back, and be part of a community dedicated to lasting change, Retire United offers a clear path forward. It's not just about where you are in life. It's about where you want to make a difference.
