Hopkins-Lloyd Community School (HLCS) is located in a food desert, or an area in which it is difficult to buy affordable, high-quality, fresh food. As the Hopkins team discussed potential ways to address better food access for our surrounding neighborhood, a teacher mentioned the Pick 'n Save Fresh Picks Mobile Market. I reached out to Hunger Task Force, the primary partner in this effort, to see how we could host our own.
The first Pick 'n Save Fresh Picks Mobile Market at Hopkins-Lloyd happened in October, paired with a family event to bring more people out. During the event we had 40 community residents, families, and HLCS staff members attend the mobile market, selling just under $800 in groceries. On November 29, we hosted our second Mobile Market at Hopkins-Lloyd, and this time the market sold over $800 in groceries to attendees!
The Mobile Market means a lot to our neighborhood. The market makes it so much easier for residents to access fresh and healthy food. We are excited to be able to bring this resource to not only our families but also the community. When people come to the Mobile Market they can expect to be greeted by friendly Hunger Task Force workers and fresh foods at low prices.
The Pick 'n Save Fresh Picks Mobile Market is unique. The market does not sell canned items or processed foods, focusing instead on fresh foods including 40+ seasonal fruits and vegetables and 10+ high-demand meat and dairy items, including chicken, ground turkey, milk, and cheese. Debit, credit, and Food Share are the only forms of payment accepted—no cash.
Anyone can shop at the Pick 'n Save Fresh Picks Mobile Market, and everyone is invited. The next Hopkins-Lloyd Mobile Market date will be this Tuesday, January 24th from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.
