Techquity volunteers help at a Laptop Distribution Event

June 15, 2026

When someone receives a computer through Techquity, their journey doesn't end after receiving their laptop.

Maybe they're trying to apply for a job but can't remember a password. Maybe they're an older adult learning how to navigate telehealth appointments. Maybe they're a student figuring out how to access online coursework for the first time. Questions arise, technology changes, and challenges can quickly become barriers.

That's why Techquity is about much more than putting a device into someone's hands.

Through community partnerships, digital literacy education, and ongoing support from Digital Navigators, Techquity is helping ensure that individuals and families across Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, and Waukesha counties have the tools, skills, and confidence they need to participate in today's digital world.

As Briana Fox, Techquity Impact Manager at United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, puts it, "We're not just giving a device, we're giving an access lane."

Because closing the digital divide requires more than technology, Techquity works through a network of agency and community partners that already serve individuals and families throughout our region. Rather than distributing devices directly, United Way collaborates with organizations that understand the unique needs of the people they serve and can connect technology resources to those who need them most.

These partners include healthcare organizations, shelters, educational institutions, community centers, and other agencies that work alongside community members every day. Because they know their clients personally, they can provide individualized support and identify barriers that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This approach also allows resources to be tailored to each person's situation. When one partner organization needed a laptop with a larger screen for a client with limited vision, Techquity helped provide a device better suited to that individual's needs.

But while we know that having a computer is an important first step, we also know it’s not enough.

That's why Techquity also invests in digital literacy. Digital literacy training is especially important for older adults, individuals with disabilities, and others who may not have had opportunities to develop technology skills. This summer, community organizations will offer no-cost digital skills classes designed to meet people where they are in their technology journey. Courses will range from foundational topics like learning how to use a computer to more advanced skills, including using emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. These opportunities help participants build confidence while developing practical skills they can use in daily life, education, and the workplace.

Digital Navigators provide ongoing, one-on-one support that extends far beyond initial device setup. They help participants troubleshoot computer issues, recover passwords, resolve internet or sound problems, enroll in classes, learn new skills, and work toward personal technology goals. Through personalized guidance, they help ensure that technology remains a tool for opportunity rather than a source of frustration.

For someone applying for jobs, attending classes, accessing telehealth appointments, or simply learning how to use a new device, having a trusted person available to answer questions can make all the difference. Digital Navigators help people build confidence and independence over time.

How You Can Help Close the Digital Divide

Creating digital opportunities takes a community effort, and volunteers play an important role in Techquity's success, helping at distribution events and supporting efforts to connect more people with technology resources.

Together with agency partners, Digital Navigators, volunteers, and supporters, United Way is helping ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in our digital world. Every laptop distributed, every class taught, and every question answered by a Digital Navigator represents a new opportunity for someone to learn, work, connect, and thrive. Whether by volunteering at a distribution event, supporting Techquity's mission, or helping spread awareness, you can play a role in closing the digital divide.

Because digital equity isn't just about technology. It's about creating pathways to education, employment, health, and opportunities for all.
