Dr. King believed that "life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" Volunteering answers that call.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered for his tireless commitment to justice, equality, and service to others. One of the most powerful ways we can honor his legacy is through volunteering here in our community, whether as an individual, family, group, or workplace.
This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as we reflect on his remarkable life, be inspired to continue his work through acts of kindness and service.
Volunteering with your family strengthens the bond you share and adds a new level to the quality time that you spend together. You can help other families in the community by participating in supply drives, diaper packing events, Backpack Coalition, or seasonal events that bring the community together. For youth looking to add experience to a resume or college application, these opportunities offer a fantastic way to learn more about the community.
When your club, scouting group, school, or religious affiliation comes together to volunteer, it reinforces your common interests and commitment to giving back to the community. Annual volunteer opportunities like the Holiday Giving Tree and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service expand your knowledge of the community, while diaper packing events, supply drives, and Services To Go can be completed on site, off site, or even virtually.
Volunteering with your workplace is as rewarding for you and your coworkers as it is for the community. It creates comradery, improves employee morale, and fosters pride in the work your company does. Gathering at large-scale events like company picnics, coming together to pack diapers, or participating in annual volunteer opportunities adds a fun spin to a workday. Running supply or diaper drives is an easy way for everyone to participate, even if your team is remote.
Volunteering is more than just giving time or resources, it’s a direct reflection of Dr. King's values. When we volunteer, we actively contribute to making life better for others, just as King advocated for the idea that the well-being of one person is tied to the well-being of all. By volunteering alongside United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, you’re helping fulfill Dr. King’s dream: a world where compassion leads the way toward building a supportive community and creating meaningful change.
Make a difference this Martin Luther King Jr. Day by joining us in uplifting our community at local nonprofit organizations on Monday, January 20. These volunteer opportunities are hosted by United Way-funded and key initiative partners. Don't miss this rewarding experience, sign up here.
